MCS Staff Update: New Moderators and Major FPS List Overhaul

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:59 AM PDT

Hello, and good day everyone (or evening, depending on where you're at)! I hope you're all doing well, and are both healthy and safe.

Before we begin, I want to give a special shout out to Mojang for their incredible work on the Nether Update. It's only been out for a few days, but so far I've seen so many smiles and excitement across the board, and loads of people are having a lot of fun. I myself have been enjoying the update in a brand new amplified world, and I cannot wait to get my hands on all that blackstone and basalt. 1.16 is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits Mojang has ever released, and it clearly shows with all the quality and love put into it. They poured their heart and soul into this update, and the results are phenomenal. Well done, Mojang!

Now then, with that out of the way, we've got a few exciting subreddit updates to share with you all today, so buckle up.

    170K+ Subs

We'll start with a smaller bit of news, just the other day we made it past 170K subscribers. While not a "milestone" like 100K or even 150K, it's still a very impressive amount, and we're well on the way to reaching 200K if the growth keeps up. Looking forward to that! :)

    New Moderators

Secondly, we have finished our moderator application process, and all five positions have been filled. Please welcome the newest additions to our moderator family:

    1. /u/solar_powered_noob42

    2. /u/LordOfAllEggs

    3. /u/RazorNemesis (he was a chat operator before, but is now a full-fledged mod)

    4. /u/mcupdatewanter (like Razor, was a chat op, but is now a mod)

    5. /u/MrOzone2020 (he's not a subreddit moderator though, as he specifically requested to be a Discord moderator only).

Also, you may have noticed another new subreddit moderator out and about named /u/Awryl. Despite recently being added to the list, he actually isn't new to the team, he's a moderator we have on our Discord server that decided to try his hand at subreddit moderating as well. He goes by "The Humbug" on there. Please be gentle with him.

We're very happy to have all of these wonderful folks with us as moderators, and we hope you're just as happy for them as we are. We know they'll do us all proud. :)

(To all those who did apply for the positions, don't feel bad that you weren't chosen, there will always be a next time. If you haven't already applied for the moderator position but are still interested in it, you're still free to do so using this application form. The positions may be filled, but all those who applied will still be on file, and if we ever do need another new batch of moderators (as replacements or otherwise), it's always nice to already have a list of people to choose from.)

    FPS List Updates

Finally, we have a major bit of news here. After receiving many complaints both from the community and internally, we went ahead and did a major overhaul/cleanup for the FPS list. This overhaul was long overdue, as the FPS list has had a lot of outdated and/or older entries that are no longer in use, as well as being incredibly disorganized and hard to read over.

Most of the current entries have not been removed, but quite a few of them have been moved to new or different sections for more organization, and several of them have also been combined due to being similar.

Here is a (very) basic changelog for the overhaul:

    • Added new sections (or split apart old ones): "Building Improvements and Decoration", "Player Vanity", "Redstone", "Transportation", "User Interface/GUIs", "Potions and Brewing", and "Environment and Weather." (this results in a slightly longer list thanks to formatting, but smaller sections overall, making it easier to read or locate certain entries)

    • Combined several entries with some others.

    • Removed some older/unused entries.

    • Added a few new entries.

    • Edited/changed/reworded some of the more vague entries.

    • Organized similarly-styled entries into smaller sub-sections within each main section. (most easily seen in the "Mobs", "Combat", and "Blocks" sections)

    • Added a paragraph in the introduction regarding the re-named "Miscellaneous Removal Reasons" section at the bottom.

The only two sections that didn't receive any updates are the "Map-Making and Commands" and "Account" sections, as they are fine as-is.

And that's the end of the updates for now. We hope you find this brand new FPS list layout to be more to your liking and easier to navigate overall, and we wish you all well in your future endeavors and ideas.

    Happy trails! :D

    Dark Quartz

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Since the new netherite block was added, I've seen a lot of complaints about how expensive it is with one of the best textures for industrial/factory buildings. To make this work, I propose a dark quartz variant, including all of the quartz blocks. This wouldn't mean adding a new ore, but could instead be crafted with quartz and black dye, in the same way wool is dyed. The block would keep the same shiny quartz texture while giving it a dark grey look. It would allow for more industrial builds that can give the same look as the netherite block while not being as expensive.

Edit: Credit to u/Pokebeast11001 for the idea to add variants for all colors made with dye. If this seemed like too many blocks for Mojang, a more unique way to make it would be smelting quartz, credit to u/SqueezyLemons1234

Make wither roses spawn in the soulsand valley

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Right now the only way to get wither roses is from withers, but I think it would make more sense if it spawned in soulsand valleys adding more depth to the biome and a reason to explore it.

Piglins attack a player wearing a wither skull, no matter if they are wearing gold

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:19 PM PDT

The wither skeletons are supposed to be the age-old enemy of the piglins, but I feel like Mojang does a poor job of showing this. I mean they attack each other if they are close enough, but how often do you see piglins near a nether fortress anyway? I think one good way to further drive home the point that they are lifelong enemies would be to make it so that if the player was wearing a wither skeleton skull, even if they where wearing any gold they would still agro the piglins in the area as if they had no gold armour.

More types of fish for the rivers of Minecraft.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:47 AM PDT

The ocean already has over 50 different fish designs, so it would be nice if mojang added more fish to the rivers.

Fish That Could Spawn In The Rivers:

-trout -pike -barracuda (for jungle rivers)

    More Specialized Armour

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:30 AM PDT

We all remember the Turtle Shell helmet from 1.13, right? It gave you some pretty cool buffs while you were underwater, making it a tad easier taking down an ocean monument. I think they wanted to experiment with specialized equipment (kind of like Terraria has) that is best for certain situations. It's a good idea but they limited it to one piece of armour.

None of them would be stronger than Netherite, obviously, but they would be better for certain situations. For example, a full turtle armour set would take less damage from water-based mobs and would allow you to breathe and swim faster. A lava-based armour set could allow you to swim in lava without taking burn damage. Maybe even an end-based armour set that would take less damage from end mobs.

It might sound a bit too similar to Terraria, but I think it could be a really cool idea to implement armour sets that are better suited for specific situations, so that people can explore more of their world for materials, and so that diamond/netherite isn't quite as universally overused for every situation.

You can get golden nuggets while fishing in Mesa biomes.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Since gold is more common in Mesa because of the California gold rush, it makes sense that you could get gold in the water, because people panned for gold back then.

    Hoppers and New Target Blocks

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I feel like hoppers should be able to take in arrows when placed under a target block. It gets kind of annoying to have to run back and forth to get arrows, and i think this could be a neat mechanic with many possibilities.

More plants should be able to be put in the flower pots

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:22 AM PDT

If you can put new crimson and warped fungi in the flower pots then why not nether wart ? Heck not just nether wart but also crops like wheat, pumpkin, melon, beetroot, carrots and potatoes.

Ability to put maps on lecterns

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:39 PM PDT

Maps have the ability to be placed on item frames, but you and other players are not able to see any other players moving on the map. Even if the map is in hand, only one person can see it at a time. What if the lectern could be the solution to this? Then all players can see the people moving on the map.

Throwing a gold nugget into a desert well grants the Luck effect.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:18 PM PDT

Desert wells have always been pretty disappointing. Well, here's my proposal on how to change that! It's as simple as it sounds. Throwing a gold nugget into a well could grant 30 minutes of the currently unused Luck effect.

This would not be reusable, as it could be exploited. Meaning you have one use only per well.

You could also throw in an iron nugget as a cheap attempt to get 15 minutes of luck, but with the risk of getting an hour of Bad Luck instead. (%15)

Throwing either a gold or an iron nugget into a well would unlock the "Here's hoping!" advancement. The Luck effect should also be reworked.

My proposal is for it to increase the odds of rare drops from mobs, on top of making chest loot better (Which is the current functionality of the effect.)

Edit: Some changes. Maybe use Gold Nuggets-Gold Ingots instead of Iron-Gold nuggets? The Luck effect should also guarantee two or more enchantments when enchanting any tool, weapon or armour piece.

Make the enchantment glint on tools & armor weaker

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:35 AM PDT

The enchantment glint needs to exist to make the enchanted item look cooler and more powerful, but at this point, netherite looks like a thanos cosplay more than a dark, hellish armor. And enchanting any colored leather armor basicly defeats the purpose of coloring it.

Solution: Make the enchanting glint less of a permanent purple glow with stripes moving along the texture, and MORE of a purple glow that pulses in and out of visibility, being as strong as the weak base layer of the "old" glint at max.

    Echolocation Monsters

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:10 AM PDT

I am just spit-balling here but what if there were mobs that instead of seeing the player, they could only here the player placing blocks, destroying blocks and walking? here are two designs for this:

Mole Beast(neutral mob): A large abomination that can dig through stone and dirt to reach the player making noise (these perhaps could also be tamed and used as natural drills?)

Crawler: A humanoid-spider beast that resides in caves and stays absolutely still until an unfortunate mob or player comes across it, where it will indiscriminate attack any noise maker.

(note)-perhaps feather falling and silk-touch make it so that the noise is muffled

Shift Clicking A Villager With A Compass Will Highlight Their Workstation & Bed.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

We all know how annoying villagers are to work with. A simple change that would let you simply see what villager was linked to what would be very helpful.

    Aware Mobs

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Passive mobs should try and flee from you if they see you with a sword. Also mobs like spiders should instantly go attack mode if you get close with a sword.

    A "lore tag."

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:56 AM PDT

Basically a "lore tag" would be a rare item that you rename and combine with a dye in an anvil. It then becomes a coloured lore tag (it would be ___ lore tag) that, when combined with an item in an anvil, applied the lore tag's set name in its set color as lore to the item you combine it with. It could possibly be rare chest loot / a master librarian trade alongside name tags

Bring back Legacy Console Edition as 'Classic' Minecraft for a discount

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Allow consumers to purchase Legacy Console as the "old" version of Minecraft under a Classic branding for cheaper than Bedrock for those who prefer it. Updates are not necessary, bug fixes are not necessary, just allow people who prefer the older version the ability to purchase it with clear disclaimer indicating what it is. People have nostalgia for these versions and having a time capsule for what Minecraft was to people then can serve as a great preservation method.

    More productive villagers

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:15 PM PDT

The Shepard should shear sheep and pick up wool, The librarian should harvest sugarcane(or farmer could), the butcher should breed and maybe kill passive mobs, the fisherman should fish, the blacksmiths should repair damaged iron golems, the cleric should give the wandering trader invisibility potions, the cartographer should explore outside of the villager to fill in maps, nitwits should attract zombies away from other villagers

Blue netherrack block: netherrack turns blue when it is gets touched by water

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:46 AM PDT

I always thought that since there's no water in the nether, netherrack blocks when exposed to it in the overworld should react weirdly to it, so just like powdered concrete turns into concrete, netherrack should turn into blue colored netherrack.

Just a new decorative block, nothing fancy, but another thing to do with all the nettherack that we all are getting so, so much lately...

Placing a soul fire torch or lantern on or near soul sand/ soil should release the soul particles similar to the particles released when walking on soul sand/ soil with soul speed enchanted books

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:34 AM PDT

The idea behind this is that the soul torches and lanterns awaken or release the souls trapped in the soul sand/soil.

Soul fire should give off more light than they already do

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:28 PM PDT

Aside from the scaring off piglins, soul torches/lanterns kind of suck. (But they look cool)

I get that they need to have some drawbacks but it's almost impossible to light up your house with them because you'll have to place another one two feet away or else the light level dips below 7. (That's when monsters spawn)

I vote we make the light value the same as normal fire or at the least make them 11 or 12.

Chainmail armor should be repaired with chains instead of iron ingots

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:15 PM PDT

It's a uniqe armor to obtain in survival so maintaining it should a bit different too. So repairing it with a chain instead of an iron ingot makes sense to me.
