Ready Your Shovels: A Complete and Full Dirt Cave Biome with New Structures and Mechanics. (+Pictures!)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 10:25 AM PDT

Whether you're here because you want a new way to play survival, or you just love cave updates, Welcome!

    ⛏️MINECRAFT: Ready Your Shovels

A cave update should give the underground world different environments separated by Depth and Biome. With this in mind, I've found a way to make the very top section of the underground a unique environment with its own treasures and adventures. Players old and new can enjoy tons of new blocks, structures, and mechanics all found near the surface of the world.

So without further ado, here is the update.

    Changelog

    Extras

🎨 Textures Available on the Discord

What can you build with Tough Dirt? This resourcepack contains most of the textures from Ready Your Shovels. You can get them from this subreddit's official discord. It will be the most recent pin in #showcase channel!

🔍 Upper Caves: The Original Idea

My inspiration for this actually comes from a suggestion I made over a year ago. And with all recent hype about a cave update, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to visit an old idea and make something more out of it.

And that was Ready Your Shovels!

Special thanks to everyone who got involved in the brainstorming on Minecraft Suggestion's Discord, and everyone who volunteered to help me with the visuals.

This entire update was in works for almost two months now and has gone through so many changes. There were a lot of things I had to scrap from this post that would've made it too large. At some point I'd like to revisit those ideas and realize the full potential of this cave biome.

Thanks for reading everyone. I hope you enjoyed it!

Right-clicking a bell on a cat should make the cat wear the bell.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:00 PM PDT

Of course, this only applies to tamed cats. Everytime the cat walks, it will produce a soft ringing sound. This is just for aesthetics.

Show us Where Blocks go when Endermen steak them

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 08:29 AM PDT

There should be a chance for small end islands to be made of different blocks from different biomes and dimensions.

For example: One island could be made of dirt and have pumpkins/melons along the surface, while another could be made of nether rack with various mushrooms. They would be made out of only blocks that endermen can pick up and place.

Add a new kind of mob called the "Swifter" to Java, Bedrock, Playstation and Xbox editions

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT

What is the Swifter? This animal is very similar to the real world manta ray, but it has some characteristics that are specific to the game, and do not occur in real life. It is a neutral mob, meaning it will only attack the player if it has a reason to.

    Features:

Appearance of adults - 4 blocks wide, 1 block tall, and a tail that is 3 blocks long. Their body mass will also be 3 blocks long/2 blocks wide. They will have one large fin on each side, sort of like the manta ray's triangular wings. Their mouth will be 2 blocks wide, and appear to always be gaping open. Directly above their mouth, will be a pair of small, black eyes. On the backs of adult swifters, there will be one large eyeball, similar in texture to the eye of ender, but not the same color. A swifter will spawn with a large eye that is one of three colors: Blue, lime green or magenta. Also starting from the middle of their back to the middle of the length of their tail, they will have a small row of spikes sticking up. These spikes will gradually get smaller as they get closer to the tail.

Colors of adults - They will be a reddish-brown color, with darker brown speckles along the tips of their fins. Their underside will be a tan/cream color.

Appearance/colors of babies - They will be miniature versions of adults in appearance and color, but babies will not have the large, third eye on their backs.

2D image of what the swifter could look like: https://i.postimg.cc/rpL0ZSdN/swifter.png

Behavior of adults - Swifters swim by flapping their fins up and down a few times, then will glide gracefully through the water. They can be found alone or in groups of 2 to 4, sometimes accompanied by a baby. Both adults and babies are very fast and have a permanent Speed I buff applied to them. If a player swims within 5 blocks directly above an adult swifter, it will raise its tail straight up as a warning. If the player does not swim away after 3 seconds, the swifter will fire a poison stringer at the player. This stinger causes the poison effect for 10 seconds. Swifters do not sting pets or any animal that is tamed to or trusts the player. (Pets do not attack swifters, either, even if the player attacks one). If a player swims above a baby swifter, they will quickly swim away.

(Fact: Real world manta rays and other rays stab with their tails but do not have venom and do not sting).

Swifters seek out ocean temples when they are in groups. Guardians will flee from swifters, who will fire their stingers at them as they swim away. Guardians can see swifters through transparent blocks such as fences, glass blocks, glass panes, leaves and iron bars. This could lead to some interesting guardian farm designs. Drowned will try to attack baby swifters, which will make any nearby adults fire stingers at the attacking drowned(s) until it/they are dead.

If a player approaches an adult swifter face to face with a trident that has the loyalty enchantment on it, the swifter will begin swimming around the player. Holding shift and right clicking on the swifter will allow the player to grab its fin, and swim with it for 30 seconds. Just like horses, the direction the swifter goes in is controlled by the player during those 30 seconds. When time is up, the swifter will "drop" the player, and swim away. The player can reapproach the swifter, or any other nearby swifter and try this process again.

Swifters are indifferent to turtles, squid, cod, salmon and tropical fish mobs.

They occasionally breach the water's surface.

They will swim through stalks of kelp, which will cause the stalks to break, then they will swim around and pick up the broken kelp in their mouths.

They spawn only in ocean biomes, in depths of 10 blocks or more. Swifters will swim into shallower waters, or may accidentally swim into a river if it is connected to an ocean biome. They do not spawn in rivers or bodies of water that are not ocean biomes.

Health/Damage dealing - Swifters have 15 hearts of health. Normal mechanics with enchanted tools and weapons apply to how they take damage. Not really a health related thing, but they are unaffected by bubble streams created from soul sand and magma blocks. Their poison sting will deal 4 hearts of damage to a player, guardian or drowned. Babies have 10 hearts of health. Swifters don't have gills like their real world counterparts, they can breathe air through their mouths.

Sounds - Swifters will make a low pitched purring noise from time to time. Babies purr also, and make gargling noises as well.

Breeding - Swifters love to eat kelp! If a player wants to breed two swifters, they can feed 1 kelp to each adult, and they will breed. Swifters always produce one offspring. (FYI, in real life, manta rays give live birth).

    Additional features:

    • An adult swifter will not fit inside a boat, but a baby will. Adult swifters will follow a boat that has their baby travelling in it.
    • Leads cannot be attached to adult and baby swifters.
    • Pet cats, wolves and parrots cannot travel with the player or teleport to them when the player is holding a swifter's fin.
    • When swifters die, they drop 2 to 4 kelp, and 3 exp orbs. Babies don't drop anything upon death.
    • When a baby swifter becomes an adult, it drops an item called a "piece of fin". The piece of fin can be turned into one bonemeal, or it can be used to brew a new potion called Potion of Breaching. This new potion will allow players to "leap" out of water as high as 2 blocks. Players will be able to breach while swimming without having to stop and reactivate swimming.

Slimeball in Splash potion to make a Bouncy Splash potion

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 07:25 AM PDT

Putting a slimeball in a splash potion would make it bounce off the ground and then explode, which means it would go at least 2x farther away.

As a downside if it hits a mob directly on the first bounce, it will bounce back towards the thrower.

Enchantment GUI should have indicators for Bookshelves

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:20 AM PDT

The Enchantment Table's GUI should display the current power of your enchantments and display how many bookshelves you currently have, and how many you need to get max power.

So it could maybe display like empty bookshelf slots that turn colored when you put a bookshelf next to the enchantment table, along with a number or a bar that displays the max possible power level of your enchantments.

    Connected Flowerpots (Repost)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT

When you put another flowerpot next to one flowerpot, it should extend and become connected, like a double chest. And it will connect to any direction endlessly. You can make a 2x2 square or an L shaped one, or an O shaped one for example.

You can also place them normally next to each other without connecting them by holding Shift / sneaking.

    An underwater village

I think this would be a lot more interesting and unique. to escape you would have to mash space bar. While inside, you would take damage as you are slowly digested.

    Polar Bears Can Swim

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Polar bears swim like the player used to until the aquatic update. They just bob up and down, it seems sort of pointless. I feel if polar bears enter water they should be a bit faster and maybe even able to go under water and catch fish. They could even have a swim animation like the player, so they move their legs.

Chromium - an endgame resource from the End

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 02:57 PM PDT

I'm putting this here now to gauge the general reaction before putting it on the feedback site. The feedback site version will use more numbers rather than comparisons (e.g. 16 light level vs light level like that of a torch)

    Summary

Chromium is a rare ore found in the End Islands that yields a multi-colored dust. This dust could be used for various purposes, including having redstone functionality. putting the Chromium Dust in a crafting grid in a 2x2 square would turn it into a silver Chromium Lump, which when placed on the ground can glow a little, and then smelting that would make it a Chrome Colored Ingot. The ingot can be used to enhance tools in unique ways. 9 ingots in a crafting grid reveals a decorative Chromium block.

Chrome is the multicolored ore and powder, Chromium is a glossy, shiny silver colored Lump, Ingot, and Block

    Where is it?

In the Outer End Highlands and Midlands, deep underground you may find Chrome Ore ( Texture I made, very small image so zoom in ) in a max vein of 1. It would be about 25x rarer than emerald. only 8 ores may spawn on any given island.

What is Chrome Ore and Chrome Dust?

Chrome Ore is textured like end stone with multicolored lumps inside of it. The texture I made was quick and dirty and should not be used. It requires a diamond pickaxe to mine and takes the same amount of time that it takes a wooden pickaxe to mine coal. Mining it gives you 1-2 Chrome Dust Another QD texture. Chrome Dust can be placed like redstone, and can be attached to redstone. Chrome Dust is a substitute for redstone wires, and it does not lose strength with distance. Chrome Dust also passively produces light at the same power as full strength redstone.

What are Chromium Lumps and Chromium Ingots?

When you put Chrome Dust in a crafting grid in a 4x4 pattern you will get Chromium Lumps. Chromium Lumps do not serve much purpose, but do have some functions. Chromium Lumps produce light when placed down, like groups of 4 sea pickles. Chromium Lumps can be used as furnace fuel, and can smelt 4 lava bucket's worth of items. Rather than disappearing, it turns into "Spent Chromium", which is much darker and can not be crafted into anything further. It is a junk item. Smelting a Chromium Lump turns it into a Chromium Ingot.

You can not make tools or armor with Chromium.

But you CAN tip pickaxes and swords with them, and you may also coat Armor with them

Enhancements (not to be confused with Enchantments)

Using the radioactive power of Chromium, you can enhance your diamond suite.

To enhance a tool, put it in the 3x3 crafting grid surrounded by Chromium Ingots

    List of enhancement powers:

    • Pickaxes that are enhanced are able to reach 2 blocks further.

    • enhanced Swords give the victim slowness 2 for 3 seconds when hit

    • enhanced helmets make your body give off light at a level of 15

    • enhanced chestplates make negative potions thrown on you shorter and weaker, and increase potency and length of positive ones.

    • enhanced leggings make crops around you grow faster

    • enhanced boots let you double jump

    • enhanced items get an extra 200 max durability

I also want there to be a special power for having the entire enhanced diamond armor set on, but I feel like the comments should decide.

Why this should be added, how it effects gameplay

Elytras and Shulker Shells are really the only reason to go into the End Islands as of right now. Chorus Fruit is a novelty and the loot you would find in End City chests is probably below the equipment level you had prior to opening the End Portal. Those are both great items, but the best way to flesh out a dimension is an ore. Diamonds are too significant to the game and there can never be any ore type that is better than them. However I personally have been finding diamond tools and armor too weak as far as durability is concerned now. So the best solution to every problem is a rare End ore that, through a lengthy process can make diamond equipment better as well as performing other functions.

    Possible Downsides

Diamonds are one of the most important aspects of Minecraft's nostalgia factor. The top tier item. Chromium enhancements may be seen as an attempt to one-up diamonds, and they are, but only in the sense that enchantments do as well.

    Comments

Is this concept good to implement? should enhancements be tweaked? are the other functions also worthwhile? I had this idea while playing the game and want to know if it would get popular support.

    Poison Spores

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 10:26 AM PDT

    Location

In mushroom island biomes and (rarely) in caves.

    Behavior & appearance

They would appear as a purple and green mushroom.

When approached it would explode into spores that would give nausea to you and damage you.

And when put into a dispenser spores would be shot at you.

    Spore in a bottle

When exploding using a bottle (much like dragons breath) can be caught and put in a bottle!

And (You guessed it!) can be used to create potions of nausea.

Nether brick requires Gold or Diamond pickaxe to mine (Idea for Nether Fortress)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:21 AM PDT

This is a small progression change I had in my mind, to make it more difficult to get access to the Nether Fortress in early game. It would make the Nether Fortress into a proper obstacle that you need to have the right tools for.

It also makes a lot of sense, since Zombie Pigmen use gold tools.

    Falcons and Falconeering

Some meteorologic events I thought of.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:37 AM PDT

Before having new weather, I think we need a little more to the...

    Clouds

They act a bit more like mobs, rather than what they do now. A player can even use a command /spawn [cloud] to spawn a cloud. They have different speeds depending on type or even themselves.

They should also be separated into categories.

    Stratus

Very similar to our current ones, but tend to make stripy patterns. They spawn in two heights, 120 and 135. The ones below are slower.

    Cumulus

Spawn at Y140 and have a rounder (cubicer?) aspect, with relatively flat "bellies".

    Cirrus

Spawn at Y300 to Y330 and look like giant fluffy feathers. They are more transparent than the other ones, and are very slow too.

    Altostratus

A bit rarer than the others. A thicker verision of the stratus that appears at around Y210.

    Cumulonimbus

The famous rainclouds. They are very tall, a single one will range from Y140 to about Y450. While some of them will be very small and cover only a "bit" of the sky, a few will be able to cover the whole screen if a player looks up from it's center. They are dark grey and are always precipitating.

A bit more on their behavious

Clouds have the highest spawn rates on the ocean biomes, also high in jungles and swamps, normal in most of the biomes and extremely low in deserts, savannas and mesas. Clouds sometimes even dispawn when entering deserts (specially cumulonimbus).

    Blizards

They can happen in snowy biomes. They will occour from east to west. They will make the fog thinker and white, and many snow particles will come from the east if they player is in this wind, it will suffer from slowness (being near fire or a fireplace will prevent it). A wall of blocks will block snow for a few blocks. So, if you make a 1×1 or a 2×2 wall, you will have two blocks with no snow. A 3×3 or 4×4 will block four blocks from snow. And so on. During a blizard, clouds are faster, and players with elytrae and flying mobs are draged to the west.

    Sandstorms

Think of the last one but with sand and also no slowness. Happens in deserts a mesas.

    Hail

Extremely rare event that occours below cumulosnimbus in jungles (normally it would be rain, of course). Small ice particles, from 1×1 to 3×3 pixels of diameter, fall from the sky, and slowly cause damage to the player and mobs. The cloud becomes greenish during the storm.

    Cyclone/windstorm

Can occour in forests, jungles, mountains and their variants. Strong winds violently push any entities that are not toutching the ground. Leaf particles apear from trees. Clouds move very fast. Exposed redstone and portals won't work during the cyclone.

    Dust devils

Exclusive to deserts, they are made out of dust particles. They are merely decorative.

    More distinct spawn eggs

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 12:09 AM PDT

I noticed recently that nowadays, there are so many mobs that it's become a chore to look for the right spawn egg. So many have basically the same colors! So, I put all the egg-spawnable mobs into seven categories, each with their own egg design. Before I get to the eggs, here are the categories:

Land Mammal: cat, cow, fox, horse, donkey, mule, sheep, pig, mooshroom, ocelot, rabbit, llama, panda, polar bear, wolf, trader llama

Arthropod: cave spider, spider, silverfish, endermite

Aquatic: cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, dolphin, guardian, elder guardian, turtle, squid

Xillager (i would say "illager" for ambiguity but y'know): villager, wandering trader, pillager, vindicator, evoker, ravager, witch

Undead: zombie, husk, drowned, zombie villager, zombie pigman, skeleton, stray, wither skeleton, phantom, zombie horse, skeleton horse

Flying: chicken (i know chickens don't fly but it's a birb ok pls dont crucify me), parrot, ghast, bat, blaze, vex

Other: enderman, slime, magma cube, shulker, creeper

Alright, now that that's over with, here are the eggs!

Left to right, top to bottom: Land Mammal, Arthropod, Aquatic, Xillager, Undead, Flying, Other.

Here's why the designs look like they do:

    • Land Mammal: Just a generic mammal design, with little ears and a nose.
    • Arthropod: Made to look like an egg sac Aquatic: Made to look like a fish egg Xillager: Emerald-shaped
    • Undead: A regular egg, but, like, grosser
    • Flying: its a flying egg lol
    • Other: The shape in the middle can look like an ambiguous head (creeper/enderman), a shulker, a jumping slime, or a jumping magma cube.

    :)

Add Passenger Height for Mobs Riding Mobs

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:28 AM PDT

For those of us who make adventure maps, it would be incredibly useful if we could adjust the height of passenger mobs riding on other mobs.

    —————

As an example for why this would be useful:

Something I've done previously is made a friendly witch for the player to trade with. I did this by having both the witch and an invisible villager 'ride' on the same armor stand. Unfortunately, using this method doesn't allow the witch to actually walk around as usual.

I'd much prefer the villager be the witch's passenger, but that puts said villager up in the air, rather then overlaying the witch, which is rather awkward for trying to trade.

If it was possible to adjust the height at which riding mobs were situated this problem could be easily solved!

    —————

    I recommend either:

    A) an actual number adjustment that allows how far the rider should be raised or lowered to be fine tuned

    OR

    B) simple binary choice where 0 puts the passenger's feet at the same level as the creature they are riding, while 1 puts them in the air at the actual "riding" height.

    Better Ranching

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 07:19 AM PDT

So I have an Idea for Minecraft. Better ranching (Yes I checked and No. It has not been planned/announced to make this in the newer updates for minecraft)

There are a few Items that have to work together for this to work so thats why there are multiple items.

The animals that can be used are: Chickens, Cows, Pigs, Sheeps, Panda's, Horse's (+ Donkeys and Mule's), Llama's and Mooshrooms, Polar Bear (maybe) and Rabbit/Bunnies.

You also have to do with the animals favorite terrain. Polar Bear snow/ice, Panda's Bamboo Jungle thing and Mooshrooms mycelium for example

    the items/blocks are:

    1. Indicator. The Indicator is used to indicate an Area for a living place for the animal. The animal has to be selectet in de indicator.
    2. Indication Fences. These Fences are used to indicate the area for the animals to live. It has to be used with the Indicator
    3. Feeding Tray. A tray to feed your animals
    4. Drinking Tray. For giving water to your animals (I guess you could use a cauldron too)
