    1 Million Subs, Rules / Flairs / Tired Submissions updates and more!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 07:39 PM PST

    Hello! As this sub is quickly reaching 1 million subscribers, the mods of /r/Minecraft have been hard at work behind the scenes [1] to update our rules for an ever-changing community. We know that we have not been the most active in this; I apologise and thank you for your patience.

    But late is better than never, so let's get started!

    Rule updates

    We are updating the rules of /r/Minecraft. Most of it are just clarifications, but we wanted to bring to your attention some changes to the text:

    1. The guidelines on "no links to livestreams" and "new users may not post videos" have been moved to the main rules page. We have also explained in a bit more details in the guidelines why we remove those posts (to prevent /r/Minecraft from becoming a dumping ground for quick karma). We would also like to remind everybody that the 1-in-10 guideline set out in the Reddit FAQ is not a set quota; when we look at your post history we look for a genuine want to contribute and become a member of the /r/Minecraft community.

    2. We've added a rule about account transfer / reselling. This is forbidden under the Minecraft EULA and we already remove these posts, but we'll spell it out as well.

    3. Updates to memes rules: The rules now explicitly mention that memes made in Minecraft are also not allowed, to clear any confusion.

    4. We've merged the Derogatory Language and Purposefully inciting arguments / personal attacks / threats rule. You're still required to be excellent to each other at all times.

    As there are no substantial changes to the rules, they will take effect immediately after this announcement.

    Tired submissions updates

    Yes, we know how annoying some of these posts are. We are updating the tired submissions list, which will take effect on all new posts made after this announcement. These are the new additions:

    • Texture glitches/errors
    • The Minecraft cake, along with "cake day" posts
    • Crafting recipes or block placements that "don't feel right" or "are illegal", including nether portal frames
    • Unlucky spawns, including unlucky nether spawns or spawns in the middle of an ocean
    • Removed items / blocks in Minecraft
    • "First time doing X, wish me luck"
    • 2D Pixel art that can be trivially generated by mods or programs, including popular meme characters / icons and "placing a few blocks to reveal the whole picture" posts.
    • Rarely-spawned mobs, such as Pink Sheep
    • Any large number of mobs crammed into a small space
    • Debate on superiority of one edition over the other

    Please continue to use the report button for any tired submission you find. We will also, from now on, update the Tired Submissions list more frequently; please check the list frequently. A good rule-of-thumb would be: If you intend to post low-quality content for quick karma, it will most likely be a tired submission.

    We are working on making the tired submissions list more visible, by putting it in the sidebar and the Red Box.

    Flair Updates Consultation

    We've been holding back on this one because of several reasons:

    1. We want to avoid flair-soup, where submissions must be categorised by platform, version, vanilla/modded, single/multiplayer, as well as the type of content (Creative, Survival, Art, Redstone, etc etc);
    2. Whatever we come up with must work across old and new Reddit, on Desktop, Mobile, Apps (official and 3rd Party) - or at least not make them unusable;
    3. Nobody reads anything - rules, flair guidelines, whatever.

    We will be adding at least one new flair (Data Packs) but we want to know what you think about our flairs and what we can change to improve them.

    Feedback...?

    As always, we would love to hear your feedback on what we can do to improve your /r/Minecraft experience. Some feedback we have received include updating the wiki (which you already can do!) and the sidebar (which we will, Soon™). Suggestions for new rules / tired submission is always welcome.

    We also don't really have a set idea how we want to celebrate 1 million subscribers, so any ideas on this is welcome!
