| [Meta] Data science and effective Minecraft server governance (thanks r/mcservers) Posted: 19 Jul 2019 12:08 PM PDT I'm a scientist, and I just published an analysis of governance plugin effectiveness that relied in part on data from listings here at r/mcservers. The goal was more to explore general theories of governance institutions than to scientifically determine the best plugins, but the data (which I've published with the paper) could speak to that as well. What's special about Minecraft from a scientific perspective is the self-hosted aspect, which makes it possible to compare hundreds of thousands of little states. By comparison, Earth's nations only let you compare a few hundred, max. I wanted to share the work and thank the community. Being an op/admin is pretty thankless, so maybe you'll appreciate some outside validation that what you do is important. We started off strong, built a community, shops, some rad bases, and all-around had a good time. With the release of 1.14, we reset the server to give everyone a fresh look at all of the newly added content and opened it up to have new people join us in the adventure. The server and staff are very active and it's a rare moment when someone isn't online or available to help through Discord. A few of our members are content creators and streamers on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. Although we don't require everyone who joins to create videos, there's a good chance you may appear in one if you so choose. A 5-team-based RPG mcmmo towny survival with a Central Spawn/Tradehub. We created the server as a memorial to my cat, Kruga. (RIP Kruga 2015, miss ya you furry lil guy!) "What's it like, can you tell me more?" You spawn at the top of the tower in a glass orb, and then make your way down the tower. The Tower is packed with command blocks that are intractable and 11 custom NPC villager traders. This dynamic economy was designed to be an RPG economy from the ground up, in a way that is not too dissimilar to EVE online. Towny has also been installed and uses the same currency (emeralds) as the npc villagers. There are 5 main teams to join, with custom enchanted armor and 'perks' for each team. The Teams are: Helio (White) Joining your choice of team comes with perks and bonuses, not to mention potential friends. The world this tower exists in is a 6k x 6k custom world called 'Mevia18'. Which is a fully custom worldmap. We also created and are continuing to add custom dungeons which respawn on their own every night. They contain rewards, but also custom NPC's that guard them. The feedback for this RPG server has been very positive and with adverts like this the server continues to grow! RULES: The rules are no hacks, and not going too far with freedom of speech. Moderators decide what is too far. The Mods and Admins are told to have a 'hands off' approach of neutrality for the teams fighting eachother. PVP Is completely banned within the tower. To keep it as pure, vanilla anarchy as possible, there are no home commands, spawn protection, or TP commands. There will be as few bans as possible, with lag machines and duping being perfectly acceptable. Backdoors and 32k weapons may be banned in the future but this is only to keep the server up and the players safe (players also won't be banned for doing said things). We are currently looking to expand our player base to make the server a bit more lively and to play with others. The server is about 11 months old but we are still far from done. The server is 99,9% vanilla, no mods, only a small datapack to allow people to sleep if others are AFK, and the more heads datapack from Hermitcraft, which allows most monsters to drop their head, though the chances are slim. We have a few plugins but these are only to keep logs and backups in case anyone griefs or steals. All your stuff is safe here, and we will of course repair all damage and return stolen items should anything happen. As a server we can promise 99,9% uptime and minimal amounts of lag. We also pride ourselves on our community which is always helpful and nice towards old and new. We try to help each other out and work together as much as possible. I, as the owner, have run countless servers before and i have many years of experience with it. I've also played on countless servers that was, eventually, shut down for whatever reason. I know the feeling of losing the ability to play on a server you've worked on for very long, and for that reason I can promise you, the player, a steady server that won't go down for any unexpected reason. | Posted: 19 Jul 2019 11:09 PM PDT TekavMC is a small-scale fun and friendly SMP style server. We currently have around 10ish players, and are looking for another 5ish committed people to join. We are currently on a earlyish-game, relatively disorganised world that we are just using to get to know everyone, until we have reached a complete player-base. We are resetting a world to a new seed most likely nextt Sunday or so, and are currently in the process of voting on a seed to choose, so that everyone can start on an even playing field. ABOUT USWe currently have a relatively early-game server, which we will run until we have a large enough player-base, looking at no more than 10-15, before resetting and starting fresh next Sunday or so. My goals with the server are to eventually have something similar to the Hermitcraft server, with individual areas for everyone, a community built and attractive looking spawn, nether hub, shopping district etc. Here are a couple of my builds that I've made in my single player survival world, if you want a reference to the scale and type that ideally I'm wanting to create on the server A few points:

We've done the best we can to optimize the server, like disabling intensive datapacks and running PaperMC to assist chunk loading. The reality is that 1.14 has greatly improved performance since launch, but is still running slower than a 1.13 server would! Just thought we'd be transparent about it :) Looks like 1.14.4 will be fixing a huge CPU issue that will likely improve performance greatly! About Us Colin and I are college students looking to play with new people! We're both engineering students and love to fiddle with redstone and farms. But we also love building beautiful structures and planning a nice base, and just generally hanging out and relaxing with some games. We enjoy longterm vanilla survival gameplay to unwind after our daily tasks. Our maps usually last at least a year, and some of us build some amazingly large projects! We launched our new 1.14.3 world in the first week of july. We have a creative server for redstone and design experimentation. We have a second server with a different jarfile and a webmap. We use Discord for voice communication . We do not use the nether roof. We welcome players from all over the globe.
